The X-Files is back with a new season! Scully seems to have aged well but Mulder is kind of showing it. I’ve watched 2 episodes so far and it’s been pretty good, and dark. Dark like the mystical nectar of fermented Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. You see what I did with that sweet transition? Tonight I wanted to try a Cabernet from Chile, so I got the Montes 2014. The winery is located in the Colchagua Valley, known for producing bold reds. This particular wine got into the Wine Spectator Top 100 in 2016 list!
Fun Fact: Chile is the seventh largest wine producing country and the fourth largest wine exporter in the world! Part of the Chilean wine boom is attributed to an influx of French immigration in the 1980’s, bringing with them their tastes and knowledge which helped guide the industry.
This wine pairs nicely with the X-Files. It’s a deep red, with aromas of plums, dark berries, chocolate, and spice. It’s not overly fruity, more laid back and balanced. It feels thick and dry, with strong tannin at the end. This was a great buy, a well-composed wine comparable in quality to some Bordeaux reds at a fraction of the price.
